Survivorship, Entrepreneurship, and Empowerment: The Journey of Tasha Brown
It was 2015, and I found myself five years into my survivorship journey, still struggling to feel whole again after the battle against breast cancer, and its remnants had left me with scars, both physical and emotional. Life was an unrelenting challenge; I was a wife, a mother of two young children, a full-time pastor, and a cancer survivor with a bilateral mastectomy, navigating the turbulent waters of early menopause. Amidst this whirlwind, I discovered peace, hope, and even beauty in the world of makeup.
Makeup became more than a routine; it became my source of strength. I could always count on my lipstick to elevate my spirits and equip me to face the trials that lay ahead. These small rituals of self-care brought moments of joy, a glimpse of normalcy, and a reminder of my inner resilience.
That year I embarked on an entrepreneurial journey by founding Brown Cosmetics, Inc. It all began with a tinted edge control product and later expanded into a cosmetics line. For me, makeup was not just an outlet; it was a vehicle for empowerment.
However, like many entrepreneurs, my journey had its share of challenges, and success was not as immediate as I had hoped. It wasn't until I ventured into the role of a full-time business advisor that I uncovered the missing piece to my entrepreneurial puzzle. I started integrating the wisdom gained from advising others into my own business and felt a profound desire to share this knowledge with a broader audience. This calling led to the creation of "Seller of Purple: A Christian Woman's Guide to Entrepreneurship," a book aimed at helping others navigate the entrepreneurial landscape. Still, I yearned to do more.
In 2023, I launched the Tasha Brown Foundation (TBF) with a resolute mission: to address a gap in the breast cancer survivorship ecosystem. While many organizations focused on raising funds for research, few, if any, were directly assisting breast cancer survivors. My journey and the persistent pain of having to make a living while grappling with the lingering effects of cancer treatment resonated deeply with me. I knew that countless others faced similar challenges and aspirations. I understood the uphill battle of starting a business and the scarcity of resources for women in similar circumstances.
With this in mind, TBF emerged as a beacon of hope and empowerment for breast cancer survivors. Our foundation aimed to bridge the gap, providing support, resources, and opportunities for those determined to rebuild their lives through entrepreneurship. Together, we embarked on a new chapter of survivorship, where dreams flourished, lives transformed, and women found strength and purpose beyond their diagnoses.
In my journey from survivor to entrepreneur to the founder of the Tasha Brown Foundation, I discovered that empowerment was not just about personal success; it was about extending a hand to lift others up, helping them break free from the constraints of their circumstances, and empowering them to chart their own path to success.
